Many thanks.....just a thought that we could be looking for the person by their birth name if they were not officially adopted !!
Yet another avenue to try !!

Anne,

There is not always an amendment next to the original birth entry of an adoptee. :O)

Where there is an additional reference this is usually because the original registration has been re-registered (on marriage, on addition of father etc)
Adoptions are soley held by The General Register Office and do not show on indexes, although the original entry (Register) is annotated.

Can anyone help me please....
I have one member of the family who was adopted and against the registration on the record is an amended ref number......but on another birth reg where we thought the child was adopted there is no amended ref number.
Is this a 'clue' on the register document that we can view on line that a child was adopted.
I noticed that there a few with amended ref numbers.
This could help trackdown a 'lost' member of the family that we though had been adopted and may not have been officially adopted and therefore there has been no change of name.
