Divorce records held at National Archives

Has anyone requested a copy of a divorce record from the National Archives, Kew?

I have found a record relating to a relative that divorced in 1925. I requested an estimate of the cost involved in having the record copied and posted to me.

I have received their response stating the record is 31 units of A3 mono, copies.

I think this is a lot of paper for one record and before I part with my child's inheritance (as per Theo on Dragons Den) I was wondering if anyone else had requested records.

Was you order as big? What will I get for my money? Have I given them the wrong info and will be getting 31 A3 sheets of papers with one paragraph mentioning my relatives?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I've never ordered a divorce file from them but have looked at plenty of them at Kew. Provided you gave them the right info about the names you're interested in then I'm sure it will be fine. Quite a big file though - the ones I've looked at haven't been as many pages as that.

I went to the National Archives and copied a Divorce File for a friend, from the same year, and it ran to 17 pages, all relating to the case. It was all the papers lodged at the Court, including some of the evidence and the result.

Thaks for the info.

Andrew, did your record give reason for divorce etc?

They give reason and will mention any co-respondent if there is one and any children.

I got the divorce papers relating to my great grandparents. I got 32 A3 pages for about £17. I considered it well worth the money as it gave me an insight into their lives. It also gave the date and place of their wedding and all the children's names and ages. It also told me that g grandma's mother was still alive. Another piece of valuable, though sad, information is that g grandma had a child the day after g granddad was particularly violent towards his wife. I had not known about this poor child before as it did not survive, probably stillborn.

I had previously written to the London Family Division Office. They had told me that the divorce records for 1907 had not survived and charged me £25 for that piece of wrong information.

It still rankles, as you can tell!
