Hi Jim, it seems almost certain that is my Joseph - thinking his father Edward died & his mother Louisa married Emmanuel Oakley, but just wanted to make sure as I have found 4 possible marriages for an Edward Bate in Dudley - also found a birth for Joseph Oakley (1853) which confused me further.
Thanks for that though as I couldn't find him in 1861.

Thanks Nicky & insomnia, I'll do that - I can't find either Edward or Joseph on the 1861 or 1871 census, and think Edward may have died in 1857 anyway.

Thanks insomnia...wasn`t sure it was the right office.....agree local offices are often better, and far more helpful than the GRO...

The address you have given is for Warwickshire Record Office which is a document archive, the local register office should be:

Dudley District Register Office
Priory Hall, Priory Park, Priory Road, Dudley, West Midlands DY1 4EU

I always try and order certificates through the local register office where possible as you can sometimes find a helpful person who can do quick checks for you. They are also usually quicker than the GRO and some will give you copies of the original document with original signatures. Certificates from the GRO are transcribed copies only.

If you ask for a reference check when applying from GRO online stating father must be Edward, they will only charge you £3.00 or £4.00 if that is not the fathers name, or you could always try the local register office for Dudley/Midlands and phone them...if you get a helpful member of staff they may do the check for you.

Have you found the other Joseph Bate on the census to check that his father isn`t Edward also?

EDIT.... think this maybe the local office you want...if not they will be able to point you in right direction.

Warwickshire Records Office, Priory Park, Cape Road, Warwick, CV34 4JS.

Hi, it's me again!

I'm really struggling with my paternal grandmothers branch of the family & will need to send for a birth certificate of her father. BUT there are 2 Joseph Bate of Dudley listed together in the same quarter of 1852. I know his father's name was Edward - but will I still have to send for both certs. or is there a way somehow to request the one I want?
Thank you
