Does anyone know if you had to pay to register a birth in the 1800s

I don't think you had to pay to register a birth, but I think you had to pay if you wanted a certificate.

No fee is or has been payable. The only cost is for full certificates. One free short (or extract) one being provided at the time of the original registration
