Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. Actually MARY ANN WILLIAMS came from Dublin, but what puzzled me most was all these girls gathered together in Wales came from all over the UK. When I first saw her father's name I too thought she was probably Welsh. Just shows eh? best regards Jayne

Hello Jayne,
I can't really help you but I would think with a surname Williams her father was probably of Welsh origins. You did not need to be an orphan to be in an Orphanage. Perhaps her mother had died and her father placed her there as he could not work and look after her.

please can anyone help solve a mystery? my rellie was born 1861 in Dublin, Ireland and by the 1871 census she was in an orphanage run by nuns - in Flintshire,Wales. The orphanage is full of children born all over the UK. What puzzles me is why were they all gathered there. Who decided they should be sent there, and in particular how did MARY ANN WILLIAMS get there. regards
Jayne
