Re. My granddad going joining a ship and going to Australia....

He signed on the ship in Liverpool about 1890ish.

He was only about 17 years old

I beleive he may have used his mothers maiden name of MAUDESLEY to avoid being discovered, again, by his stepfather, so he would have been JOHN MAUDESLEY

He returned to the UK some two years later but signed off the ship when it docked in the Royal group of docks, London

Any pointers as to where I can search will be very gratefully received.
