Hi Kath, thanks for the reply. Charlotte appears on the 1851 census. They didn't appear to leave the area around Bethnal Green. I looked at other later marriages but they didn't seem to fit the area.

Edit: Hi Kattie, thanks for that although the possibility of them marrying in Kensington is dubious. They seemed to be rooted to their birth areas.

Could it be 1st wife died and this is his second marriage

Possibly best to order the cert to find out who he married.

Perhaps one of the other females on the marriage index was his wife and she died and he then married again to Charlotte. There are a few marriages after 1840 for a Charles Newman to a Charlotte on FreeBMD.

I have note of the marriage between Charles Newman and wife in E. London 1838 vol 2 page 178.

On the census records his wife is listed as Charlotte.

I cannot find a Charlotte ???? on the ref for that year, can anybody help please?
