Bren - More specifically, the GRO marr index entry shows:

Marriages Sep 1884 (>99%)
Slack Mary Jane Shardlow 7b 658
THORPE Thomas Shardlow 7b 658

So they were married in Shardlow Registration District, not necessarily in the village of Shardlow, Derbyshire.
In fact, the RD includes villages in Notts and Leics, as you can see by click on the "Shardlow" link, then the more info "here" link.
In this case, we know (since Nicola's seen the m.cert) they were born in Shardlow RD, but 10km to NNE, in Stapleford, Notts.

Bren from Oldham

Bren from Oldham Report 25 Aug 2009 00:17

the entry for the marriage of Thomas Thorpe and Mary Jane Slack in 1884 shows them being married at Shardlow which is in Derbyshire

one problem is that people sometimes made up the names of their fathers!

Thanks for your replies.

Suzi-Wong: It's Stapleford in Nottinghamshire according to the certificate, but i think it's on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire now.

Potty: Both Thomas and his father and his father-in-law were colliers, and Mary Jane did not have a profession. I've found them in 1891-1911, and his age varies by about 3 years! I think he was born around 1863-1865.

Potty Report 24 Aug 2009 17:22

Stapleford is in Belper registration district, Derbyshire.

Nicola, what were the father's occupations? Also Thomas and Mary Jane's?

Have you found Thomas and Mary Jane on the census after their marriage? If so, what are their POB?

I've just received a marriage certificate, these are the details on it:

August 24th 1884, Stapleford
Thomas Thorpe, Age: UNDER, father is Thomas Thorpe
Mary Jane SLack, Age: UNDER, father is William Slack

Witnesses are Thomas Mann (I think) and Jemima (can't read the surname).

Firstly, does anyone know what 'under' means? I presume it means that they were under 18 or 21?

Secondly, I can't find either of them with their respective fathers on the 1871 or 1881 census. What should I try next? Thanks!
