Hi Sue, Many thanks for your comments, I wonder if the size of my family would have been why we were told we would have been split up?. Perhaps my memory is clouded as this was over 50 years ago, Isuppose it could have been simply for the sleeping arrangements while on board ship. Doesnt seem a very good reason not to have gone though, I think its more likely someone got cold feet. Oh well just another of those things I will never know. regards Chrys

When my parents and I emigrated in 1956 we were separated from my dad for the trip but only as far as the sleeping arrangements. We could spend the day together and eat together. When we were living on the migrant hostel we lived as a family and ate in a common dining area.

Hi Geraldine, thanks for confirming that, I was sure that us being seperated was the reason my parents didnt take the plunge, There were 7 of us children 4 boys and 3 girls. regards Chrys.

Migrants came over to Australia on the boat during the 50's,60's and into the early 70's. Families were indeed broken up for the long journey into male and female groups... your dad with your brothers and your mum with the her daughters. They may well have been segregated at the migrant hostel too. By the time we arrived in 1972 all that had changed and families stayed together.

You may want to put a header of something like "Searching for Australian rellie" - it would attract the Aus members who may be able to help you.

Not sure about the being separated bit? I know my mum actually completed the paperwork for us lot to go but then her mother had a stroke and we never got there.

Hi Heather I think your right about the £10.00 Poms, I know my family were planning to do just this in 1960s, but apparently my father and brothers would have been seperated from my mother and us girls for some reason and so they decided against it. My reason for asking is I have today found a cousin I knew nothing about living just a 10 min drive from me, He has been trying without successto find another cousin who he knows emmigrated with her parents to NSW in 1955, I have been able to find the details on ancestry, and thought it would be really nice if I could find her before we meet up in a couple of weeks time, he has been searching through the Salavtion Army but without any luck, just thought that there may have been a rellie already there that they may have gone to, many thanks for your prompt reply, regards Chrys.

I think was probably the era of the £10 Poms, when Aus needed workers and you just paid a tenner.

Hi, would anyone be able to tell me if when someone Emmigrated to Australia at this time would they have needed to be sponsered?, or have to have either accomadation and/or a job to go too. many thanks Chrys.
