Birth, marriage and death certs can be ordered online from the GRO at www.gro.gov.uk.

If you have the reference number they cost £7. Other sites will order them on your behalf but often charge much more than this.

From 1837 to about 1935 you can search for the reference free on www.freebmd.org, it will have a quarter e.g. Mar 1888, a district e.g. Wycombe, a volume e.g. 1a, and a page number e.g. 444.

Ancestry have fully transcribed birth and marriage indexes up to 2005. Deaths are in progress and should be available by Christmas.

A number of sites have the indexes which you can search manually, quarter by quarter. Also main county libraries / records offices will have these on microfiche.

Before 1837 there was no civil registration so you wouldn't be able to get a certificate, but you may be able to find a record of the marriage in the appropriate parish register. Try www.familysearch.org as a first point of call.

Hi Laura,

If it's too recent, it won't be on FreeBMD so you'll need to look on Ancestry - or ask on here for someone to do a lookup for you.

If the marriage was in Lancashire try Lancs Bmd and you may find it there. If you do click on the reference no on the right hand side this will bring up details of the marriage click on the ref no again and this will bring up a form for you to apply for the certificate from the local registrars office
