Many thanks for all your information. At least I am not alone. I do know that she was single in 1901 and was a widow according to the 1911 census. Although this is qhuite a small window to look at, his name was James or Edward Williams. Not an uncommon name and the last time I checked the death index, there were approx 6500 to sift through without a clue as to how old he was, where he lived etc.
Thanks for replying.

Must be something about marrying in 1914

My grandmothers birth cert in 1900 suggests her parents were married and this seems to be the case in 1901 and 1911 census but the marriage took place in 1914

My father's birth certificate showed married name and maiden name of his mother + fathers name etc.....all the stuff you would expect to see.

I already knew before I ordered the certificate that they never married . My mum had luckily filled me in with all the "family gossip" before she died.

I can only assume that either his father was present at the registration and agreed to his name being entered, or my grandmother registered the birth on her own and just lied.

Just to say

On the 1901 my Nan's parents said they were married......then i found them all on the 1911 & they stated the were married for 11 years......... but they married in 1914

I have the same trouble with my gt grandparents. Grandmothers birth cert has parents married. Grans marriage cert has same father and occ photographer
Gran on the census as nursechild.

No sign of marriage of the parents . Nothing obvious for them on the census in the area.So frustrating. I am assuming they were not married

I guess the next thing is to find a baptism

Is this an English or Welsh birth certificate? If so, marriage is not mentioned although it may be implied by the wording, but many parents were not completely truthful and gave the impression that they were married, when they were not.

Alternatively, the child's mother may have had a previous marriage, so you won't find a marriage of her with her maiden name marrying the child's father. She will probably have married using her 1st married name, in this case.

I am trying ti find out if there are other ways of finding a marriage certificate other than looking on the usual web sites. I have a birth certificate stating that the mother of the child has married and shows her maiden name, however, even though I have both parents names, I cannot find the relevant certificate to trace the fathers' family and I have no information about the father than his name. I have looked on the census's but he seems to have slipped through the net somehow. I have tried IGI, Genes, Find my past, Ancestry and parish records to no avail. If anyone has some ideas, I would be grateful for them. Thanks you.
