Shirl - yes was a shock so am umming and erring. I am lucky enough to know of my gt. grandfather and have a photo and his marriage and death cert so at least I have something but am really pondering whether one can really justify the money that may, and only may, lead me one step further back in the tree to carry on with.

I think it will really have to sit on the back burner for now. Hopefully at some stage their prices may come down - but wont hold my breath as things always go up not down!!

Thanks for the advice anyway - it was really worth following up on + I now know these records are unlikely to get into the census sets and I am not overlooking anything.

All the best

Carol

Oh Wow this is news to me as when we enquired about 4/5 years ago re my FIL they didnt charge anything for the search. They didnt find him though so no idea if they would have wanted money for his records had he been in Barnardos
i suppose since they have opened up their records they have been swamped with enquiries so need to charge for the work it involves.
Would make me think though whether to pay out such a large sum but i would have loved some info on dad and seen his photo. his father was an elusive man who managed to evade every census and as he never married dads mum ,altho she called herself Mrs, we havent been able to find much about him other than i did find he WAS married and got that cert so at least we know his approx birth year and his dads name. Would love to know why dad was put into a home,
Shirley

Further Information that may be of interest to other parties following response from the Barnardo Foundation.

Barnardos charge 15 pounds just to search for the name.

If they locate a name two options are then given to obtain information

a. 70 pounds - Admission Package
This package contains:
(Subject to availability)
1) Admission History
2) Placement Details
3) Individual Photograph
4) Précis
5) Homes Information Sheets

b. 85 pounds - Full History Package
This package contains:
(Subject to availability)
1) Admission History
2) Placement Details
3) Individual Photograph
4) Précis
5) Homes Information Sheet
6) Record Book Entry
7) Situation Book Entry (boys only)
8) Location Photographs

So after picking myself up of the floor - one really needs to contemplate whether worthwhile pursuing - this equates to around $200 for me!!

I realise this organisation does and has done a wonderful service to children over the years and one doesn't begrudge paying for info especially when it assists charities like this but it does make one stop and think.

Hi Paula

I have checked thru the 81/91 census but only finding ones with parents! Have sent a request as Shirley suggested.

If I get a street addy for them I can do street searches through The Gen which I also subscribe to and will show all residents of the street.

Thanks Shirley - do they only pass the info on through direct contact?

Do you know I looked at their website before I posted and obviously couldn't see the link for looking! Sorry about that.

Many thanks

Carol

Are there any records that cover children of these orphanages in the London area for 1881 or 1891 census. I have been told that my ggf born 1875 was an orphan of one of the homes in the London area. Unfortunately I don't know which and realise there are many of these but if someone could point me to record sets that would be great.

Many thanks

Carol
