Hi

My 3xgreat grandfather was William Taylor born in Wimbish, Essex in 1824 (census ages point to him being born 1821-1824).

He is last seen aged 50 in the 1871 census living in Canewdon, Essex with wife Mary Ann Taylor aged 41 and children William aged 16, James aged 13 and Elizabeth aged 6. Mary Ann Taylor died later on in 1871. The NBI has her burial in September 1871 at Canewdon aged 41.

After this William vanishes. His 3 children are living seperately in 1881. James is lodging in Rochford, Elizabeth is in service and William is living at the sweet shop and no one they are with appear to be relatives.

I have been unable to locate his death. This is a brickwall that I have not been able to solve for a while. There are only 3 possible deaths 1871-1881 in Essex and they are in Lexden, Tendring and Edmonton which came under Essex, Hertfordshire.

I have been unable to find a remarriage. Could he have emigrated? If he did emigrate there must have been a reason why his children stayed in England.

Has anyone got access to the NBI for Canewdon just to double check if he is buried there? NBI website says Canewdon burials have been transcribed.

Any ideas please?

Cancel that - Manuden exists in its own right, near Bishop's Stortford.

Hi all

My William was born in Wimbish and baptised there in February 1824. He moved down to Canewdon in about 1845ish.

I cannot find any possible deaths especially not in the district Canewdon comes under in the 1870s and I cannot find him in the 1881 census. There are only a couple of William Taylors who died in Essex 1871-1881 who were born around 1819-1829 and none seem to fit.

Hi

I may have to look into the possibility that he emigrated. It would be good to find out what happened to him.
