Hi Joan,

Although it is difficult to read i think his regiment is 44th regiment of Foot.

Cheers for the help, I may put something on the records office board and see if anyone can help me from there. I can say when we found the parchment I scanned it so we didn't have to keep touching the original, it was very hard to scan but eventually I got there.

Thank you to everyone for your help.
Regards
Rachael

Hi Amokavid,

Did you get the sign up paperwork handed down or did you manage to get a copy of it from somewhere and if so where?

Many thanks for the info. It does look like I might have hit a real dead end here :-(

It is interesting though.

As far as I know, he never married. so I can't get any other information on him, if it wasn't for his army discharged papers no-one would know anything about apart from the rumours of a secret child in the family that noone knew the name of.

I doubt he would be asked to provide a b.cert or anything like that. He might be asked for a marr cert if he wanted to name his wife as n.o.k., but I doubt that too.

I have a relative born out of wedlock around 1849 called Thomas Eden. I have his army discharge papers dated 17/12/1879 which shows he sign up at Aldershot on 31/07/1878. How can I find out if he had to provide any paperwork before signing on (eg birth or baptism record). He is shown on 1891 census under the name of his legitimate brother as his parents wanted to keep him "secret".
Any advice greatly received
