Sharon

there is no "official" need to change your name

You can just do it

.......... as long as it is not for any nefarious purpose!

I can remember seeing notices in the local paper back in the 40s and 50s that basically said somehting like "as of September 5 1947, John Smith will be known as Franklin Roosevelt"

........ other people just told friends etc that their name from now on would be xxxxxx

It can be done by Deed Poll ......... and then there would be records.

But ....... it all comes down to cost. Deed Poll cost money, and so did putting an ad in the paper.

You may be lucky, but you don't necessarily have to go through any official procedure to change your name, now or in the past. You can call yourself what you like.

Did he have a step-father? This is sometimes the cause of a change of name.
