Marriage cert

Hi Everyone,
I am sending for a fairly recent marriage cert 1995 it asks for District name and number, now is this the volume number as it is in older certs or the register number that I have not come across before

Not sure if it applies to marriage certificates but you cannot purchase a recent birth certificate (last 50 years) without knowing all the information i.e. exact date, place, parents etc.
