Susan, you need the birth reference and district (from freebmd up to about 1925 or ancestry if later). Then you can order online from GRO - they cost £7.
If you aren't sure what you are doing I suggest you get advice on here the 1st time, that's what I did! Just give some details and folks will make sure you have the correct details.

You can order online from www.gro.gov.uk for seven pounds. You will need the year, district, volume and page number.

Here is an example of my ancestor Mr Jonah Roden born in Wellington in Shropshire.

Births Dec 1870

Hope that helps,

The practice on these boards is to misuse "certificate" and act as though it only applied to certified copies of statutory registrations of BMDs. (This is in spite of the fact that the legal birth registration acts refer to baptismal certs and certs of naming for col 10 entries on a b.cert). Best to go along with it.

One registers a BMD at the local registers office, and they make a copy and send the copy to the GRO. You can buy a copy of this from either of these locations - in the case of Hampshire (excl Southampton-Portsmouth), I think you can buy a cert from any other register office in Hampshire, incl Winchester.

If you want to buy a cert from the GRO, and avoid the search fee, then you need their reference which you can look up at:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

With the ref, a cert will cost 7 GBP if ordered online at:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
(A ref has the name, year, quarter (recently month), rego district, vol #, page #)

For Winchester rego office:
http://www3.hants.gov.uk/registration/registration-certificates.htm
http://www3.hants.gov.uk/registration/registration-contact/registration-winchester.htm
(Local refs have different info, if you ever get hold of one, although it's not necessary)

Seperate from these certs, one can buy images of parish registers, etc., which record baptisms, marriages and burials (and banns etc). Obviously current registers are with the church, but old registers are usually deposited in the county records office (but not always - catholic registers are often deposited in the diocese archives, etc).
Hampshire records office is at Winchester:
