If I join ancestry will I be able to go back in time further than 1816, either on census returns or elsewhere?

Have you looked for your family on Familysearch.org ?

Ancestry have a few records and Trees that have been compiled by other members.

Ancestry:-
Census form 1841 - 1901
BMD's 1837 - 2005.

There are very few census's prior to 1841 and they were mainly head counts, Not on Ancestry though, www.familysearch.org is best for pre 1837 records

You don't need to be a member to see what they have on offer.
this is one of my surnames after I have logged out.
5 Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837
2 Devon, England, Extracted Parish Records
1 Gloucestershire, England, Extracted Parish Records
1 Somerset, England, Extracted Parish Records
As you can see, very little and some of the records are the same as Familysearch.

The Mormon site can be very useful

Just be very careful that you distinguish between EXTRACTED and SUBMITTED records

EXTRACTED records have been taken from the actual parish records

SUBMITTED records have been sent in by people, usually Church members .... and do not have any backing documentation.

Take Submitted records under advisement, but do not add them to your tree or take them as accurate unless and until you can find that backup documentation.

I usually pay attention ONLY to the International Genealogical Index on familysearch

go to the website, on the home page click on Advanced Search, then scroll down to International Genealogical Index.

But also be aware that ancestry is now carrying all kinds of older records ...... including parish records of marriages and baptisms going back to 1530 or so.
