Theres a tiny toll bridge near me in Farmoor near Eynsham Oxfordhire and theres a fixed charge of 5p ... the bridge is privately owned and has been for decades theres some kind of by law that toll collectors can only collect so much hence the 5p charge ( but is in the process of being sold as family die off and remaining family don't wish to run it ... tiny bridge but on the market for I think 1.25 million) Looks like the council will buy it and prob stick in some traffic lights !

It was only last week when i was visiting some friends in Cheshire, they were taking us to see Dunham Massey park and House etc, we had to cross a bridge over the Mersey i think, it was only a small country road, we had to pay a toll of 14p, so these toll places are not always the large bridges etc that we know today.
I must admit i was surprised.

I expect he collected road tolls. Did he live in a toll house?

Just checked 1851 census he lived at Burnley Bar - a toll bar was/is a toll gate.

Have you seen this about Colne in the 1840s? Fascinating.

This is about Burnley in the 1820s and a lot about the toll bar.

You often had to pay a "Toll" (a sum of money) to cross a bridge or use a particular road. The Toll Collector would collect this money.

There are still some toll bridges in operation today.
