I'm really pleased you posted about the open day Maureen. The work they have done is great and there is a table that they had made which is amazing.

It looks just like a table with a cloth on it but on closer inspection (and after being told about it) you find that what looks like a cloth is actually wood and the piece of "cloth" that hangs down both sides of the table and falls into folds at the floor is actually the legs of the table made of a lovely light coloured wood. It's not easy to describe but is really a remarkable piece of furniture.

Hi Maureen,

Just wanted to say another thank you for mentioning the open day at St. John's Church.

I visited with my son last Saturday afternoon, and although they didn't have the very old parish records on show (which were what I'd wanted to see) it was lovely to see the church (which is beautiful) and the work they'd had done.

We also got the chance to go up the bell tower and have a go at playing the bells they use for weddings, Christmas etc. It was a strange arrangement of 8 ropes that were on a frame against a wall and you pulled them towards yourself rather than being loose and pulling them downwards. Everyone was having a go and I'm sure the people who lived round about must have been fed up by the end of the day but it was something I never thought I'd get to do so I enjoyed myself.

The church is well worth a visit.

Hi Maureen,

I'm not actually looking for anything as I already have a copy of the baptism record which I got from Teesside Archives in Middlesbrough, so I know the baptism was at St. John the Baptist.

It will just be interesting to see if they have the actual old registers there and also to look at the church.

Thanks for the information - I wouldn't have known about it without your post.

Yes, Kath. It's St John the Baptist at the top of Butts Lane.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

Hi Maureen,

Would that be St. John the Baptist Church? One of my husband's grandfather's sisters was baptised there in 1853 so it would be interesting to see the old registers. We don't live too far away so I may call in.

St John's Anglican Church, Egglescliffe, now part of Stockton-on-Tees but formerly part of Co Durham, is having an open weekend on 26th / 27th September so people can see what has been done to the building. As part of that the old parish registers that are kept in the Church will be available to inspect. No prior appointment needed so if you're in the area and have interests in that parish it might be an ideal opportunity to look.
Opening times Saturday 10 till 4

Sunday 11.30 till 3.30.
