Can anyone advise which web site would be the best to start my family tree as I am Irish and my partner is English and would need to get access to both records of ancestors?

Hi Teresa,

One website doesn't fit all! You'll find yourself dipping in and out of quite a few different sites, depending on the dates.

If you know your own roots back to 1911, the Irish 1911 census is online (and free). You might need to buy some certs to get yourself back that far. There is also Familysearch which is in the process of putting Irish parish records online - it's still at the pilot stage but is very good.

For English records, there's freeBMD, Familysearch, and a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast will cover a lot of your needs.

Have fun,
Janice

Hi Janice,
Thank for giving my friend Teresa that info. I am a novice to this and wasn't much help to her.
Regards Irene.
