Wills from York

Rutland Belle

Thanks for thinking of me.

My will arrived on Saturday! Actually, it isn't that interesting but it did prove something that I was trying to find out so I mustn't grumble. He only had a wife, you see, no children, and I suppose after 15 years of marriage they had given up hope of having any and he made his will which was proven 30 years later.

He left a total of £17,000; 5 years later his wife left double this amount. Can I assume then, that the 'other half' of the 'fortune' (as it was then) was already in his wife's name? I have been guided to a 'how much is it worth site' to try and find out how much the house was worth. I still have no idea though and the house is no longer so I can't estimate a modern value.

This is also my only wealthy relative. The wife was my 3xgreat aunt. She didn't want my great granddad to inherit anything as she has a low opinion of him, I think, but her will wasn't signed so great granddad inherited a fortune and promptly drank/gambled it away....just my luck!

sorry to ramble on!

Janet have you got your Will yet from York?

I have mine now and it is fascinating well worth the £5 as it confirmed a lot of my earlier research. I used the currency converter on National Arhives to work out that the estate in todays money was worth about £100,000 (my only wealthy relative !!)

Thank you Suzanne and Jennifer for your replies.

I shall stop watching for the postman, then, and hope it arrives next week.

I applied for a will from 1895 from the York office over two weeks ago but it hasn't arrived yet.

Does anyone know how long they take to send, please? :-)

Yours, impatiently, Janet
