his father was listed on the marriage certificate as william higgins, deceased.i have him on the 1881,1891,1901 census i know he died in 1910.but there does not seem to be a trace of him before 1881.and on every census he has a different date of birth,i cannot find his birth as i don't think he was registered because at that time they did not have to.i am just at a loss of where to look for him.regards bryan

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 22 Sep 2009 07:23

My gt grandfather disappeared before the 1871. I looked for his marriage and found one with the correct wife.

He married with a double barrelled name.It was the middle name he later adopted after marriage
Went to the 1861 census back and found him with the correct father and occupation with the surname the same as the second name he married with.
With help from another relative also puzzled over the name change we worked out gt grandfathers grandparents never married . So his father had his mothers surname who he passed on to the son my gt grandfather.

To confirm it all after realising what had happened I found my grandmothers first marriage which had alluded me She married with the double name even though her birth is registered with a single name. At least it confirmed our findings..
