if a birth parent marries and the new partner wishes to become the legal parent then both including the birth parent go through an adoption process with a registration amendment. of the birth indexes,,,,..it can also be changed legally by deed poll so it wil be the surname you will be legally known by and no GRO details are changed.

Or as in my Mothers case, adoption is a possibility. My Grandparents were both still married to other people when my Mum was born. Consequently when they married each other Mum was adopted by her biological Father.

Both options have occurred in my family. An aunt had an illegitimate son who kept her maiden surname even after she was married (not to his father). But when an uncle married a widow her two sons from her first marriage took her new surname.

could have been done by deed poll OR if these were your natural parents a re registration of the birth could have been done. You can though call yourself any name as long as its not to defraud so by Mum marrying they could have decided just to call you by the new surname
