What does RSM stand for?

Can anyone suggest what the RSM in London is? I have found an ancestor in the 1881 census whose occupation is given as "student at the RSM". He is boarding in Netherwood Street in Hammersmith with several other RSM students, so it may have been fairly local. Any ideas much appreciated.

RSM usually means Royal Society of Medicine. Big hospital at Hammersmith, so a possibility.

Thanks Ozibird

Royal Society of Medicine was my first thought, but apparently this is not an educational establishment, but a society "established in early 19th century to bring together medical professionals to share and expand their knowledge" and did not have students (according to the email I received from them).

I think I've found him in the 1891 census - still boarding in London (now in Christchurch) and occupation given as an analytical chemist. Perhaps he was at the Royal School of Mines, which I had never heard of but is apparently quite a big college. But I don't think it was anywhere near Hammersmith.

Not so sure about Royal School of Music. There is an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (Schools, plural, not School) which is a joint board for the purpose of organising exams. It represents the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. I don't think there is a Royal School of Music as such.

Penny, what's his surname? Then we can all have a go at working it out.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be back again tomorrow to see if anyone's come up with anything else. (Time for bed!)

In 1881 the RSM was located at 53 Berners Street.

www.rsm.ac.uk/welcom/history.php tells you more about the history and of notables who were members i.e. Louis Pasteur, Edward Jenner.
