Hi Karen

I went back to the Archive this afternoon for one last trawl through the parish records. I was starting to think your lot had been making up the fact that they were born in Jersey. Anyway, I found this little clutch of St Brelade baptisms.

BOTTAM
21/2/1830 William Edwin, son of Robert Bottam and Mary, born 2/2/1830

8/1/1832 Mary Ann, parents as above, born 20/12/1831

15/9/1833 Frederick Daniel, parents as above, born 23/8/1833
Burial 27/6/1836, aged 2 years and 10 months

30/8/1835 Benjamin James, parents as above, born 9/8/1835

So this is the family found in St Helier in 1841 but with Mary aged 10 not being born as stated in England but in Jersey, I thought it odd that the 2 boys were born in Jersey and the middle child was born in England.

Name Age
Robert Bottomley 45
William Bottomley 12
Benjamin Bottomley 6
Mary Bottomley 10

I would suspect that Mary Ann, who married Henry Brown and Benjamin were brother and sister.
Have you got Benjamin's marriage certificate to confirm the name of his father as Robert?

I have the reference for Mary Ann's marriage to Henry so I'll go and check that iin the next few days and fingers crossed her father's name will be Robert

I'd suggest Karen waits until the Archive opens again on Tues - no point in paying for something I'll check out for nothing.

I pm'd Karen with the baptism of Emily Brown which gives the mmn as Bottomley but should be able to find out more from the records, although if they decided to change their name to Botham I don't think I'll be able to throw much light there.

Thanked by pm, but there's still confusion over the names, understandably. "Karen" has found a Jersey website that charges to sort these types of things out, and wants to know if this is a good investment.

Anybody able to help with that question?

Meanwhile she's waiting to see if jerseylily can shed some light.

Karen Report 24 Sep 2009 23:53

Hello Jerseylily
When you check the Jersey census/archives for Mary Ann Botham/Bottomley, could you please check for a Benjamin Botham b. 1836 Brelade.
We have a worrying suspicion that the descendants of Mary Ann Botham may have married the descendants of Benjamin Botham
Thanking you kindly
Karen

Please please help???

I am having trouble with my research.

There seems to be some confusion over my ancestors, my great-grandmother's mother.

Previous research has given her as having two names and I cannot seem to find out which one is the correct one, CAN ANYBODY HELP?

Here are the details that I have Emily Brown (my great-grandmother) born 1854 St. Helier, Jersey. Her father was Henry Brown born 1829 St. Helier, Jersey now comes the confusing bit...
Mother: Mary Ann Botham or Bottomley born 1831 St. Brelades, Jersey.
How can I find out which surname is correct???
I am totally lost!

I've checked the census'

I can't even seem to find a marriage!

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!
