Daisy
Welcome to this addictive hobby.

To be absolutely sure you have the correct parents names you really need to buy a birth certs
The English naming pattern from 1700-1875 explains .

You can have several names the same born around the same time and area so you need to prove which are yours

Hi Daisy, don't worry too much about birth years put on census returns, they are often a few years out.

One thing that I am learning is to follow you instinct, The Ecclesall Bierlow sounds good to me. By the way, most of my rels come from there.

Look for other clues such as fathers occupation.

Good luck with your search, and don't be afraid to ask for help if stuck. Love, Nina from Sheffield.

Thanks everyone for your help...After Jan's reply I had a go at searching. It took an hour or so but I found Alice (or so I thought) maiden name Roebuck. Ive logged back on this evening and Im surprised to see all the responses!

Im confused now....What am I doing wrong? Thomas and Alice originate from Sheffield and I found the marriage of Thomas and Alice from Worksop and the DOB's matched so I thought I was on the right lines!. I now think its wrong. I think it is more likely to be THOMPSON, Alice Henrietta, Ecclesall B., 9c, 422....that Caroline (Bluegrassfan) found I knew her middle initial to be H and Ecclesall is a parish of Sheffield. Why did it not come up with Alice Henrietta for me?? Ive also checked the DOB for Alice Henrietta and she was born 1856 but the 1901 census has her age 43 so born in 1858, did they lie about their age back then!LOL! If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jo

Hi Daisy, have a look at the Tips for new members, only basic stuff but wil help you get an overview.

To get Alice's maiden name you could buy one of their kids birth certs

Thomas & Alice will feature on 1861 and subsequent census.
Ancestry.co.uk have census and many other records which are available by subscription. You can view for free by taking advantage of 14 day trial offer so jump in and help yourself.
Be lucky

Joanne, how lovely that you want to do this yourself - so much more satisfying! I forbid others to spoil your fun by doing this for you!!

You need the freebmd site - just google it (Website is http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl)

The most foolproof way is to get Alices's maiden name first by ordering a birth cert of one of the children. However, if you are lucky and not too many people with these names married before 1850, you might be able to locate them without this. Birth cert is most reliable way though.

click on "search"

You will see a page with various boxes to tick/fill in. You need to select "marriage" then fill in your grandfather's name and specify spouse forename as Alice. You can put area too - I usually only put county as people's place of marriage might not be what you think! And fill in a year range - make it generous!

When happy, click search and wait!

It will give you all entries with Thomas Hanson and Alice somebody in them, but will not tell you he married that person or someone else on the same page.

Good luck!

Hi,
Im new to this Family History stuff. Its so exciting I have found my Great Great Grandad Thoma Hanson born 1859 and his wife Alice H Hanson born 1858. I would like to find out when they married and what Alice's maiden name was? Where do I start? I know they had kids starting from the 1890's onwards so assume they married before that? Do I have enough info to start to look, if yes, how and where do I look?

Thanks Joanne
