Good morning everyone,

I’m just looking for some clarification regarding corrected entries for deaths, issued by the Procurator Fiscal’s office in Scotland.

I have a number of death certificates where there is a corrected entry in place. In all of them with the exception of one, the information provided: Name, sex, age, cause of death, address etc has been exactly the same as that shown on the death certificate. The only exception to this is where a relative was found dead in 1958 and the cause of death was blank on the death certificate, and then added on the corrected entry, I assume following an autopsy.

I am a little confused as to the point of these entries. I can understand one being made if the information differed to that originally advised, or there was more information to be had at a later date, but not sure why they issue them if all the information is the same.

I’m not sure if the corrected entry issued by the Procurator Fiscal is the equivalent of an inquest into the death? If there was an inquest would there be further documents to locate? I know in Australia I can access them dependant upon the year of death but not sure how Scottish Law works.

If anyone could shed some light I’d be most grateful.
