Hi all

This line of enquiry is doing my head in…
Frank Shelton Poole married St Saviour 1887 I have him, aged 16 in 1881, therefore he was b c1864 – there is an 1864 birth Newington.
From the 1881 census I have his father as Francis S Poole aged 44 , b Wellington (Arleston)Shropshire. Therefore Francis S b c 1836. There is an IGI baptism for a Frances Shelton Poole 12 10 1836 in Wellington son of John Poole and Jane. J&J also had a daughter – Jane Shelton Poole.
I am trying to track another Frank Poole (Frank Tarbett Poole 1887 Clun) who is the son of John Robert (1845-93). Frank T Poole has a brother (Sidney Shelton b 1882

Obviously there is a Shelton tie up somewhere.

There is a marriage in 1831 in Bromfield, Shrops between a John Poole and Jane Overton. Looking at the IGI for Bromfield there are several children that fit – with gaps where others could have been born out of parish.

I am beginning to wonder whether Overton has been corrupted at some point to Shelton (**e*ton is common) but there are Overtons and Sheltons in the area.
Somehow I want to find where Shelton and presumably Tarbett came into the equation – and any help would really be appreciated.

I think it unlikely that Overton was corrupted to Shelton, but stranger things .........................

In my family a surname of the female line has been used for a boy's name for 6 generations. You may have to go back further than you have done so far.

In 1891 Frank & Sydney are sons of John Robert Poole c1840 of Arleston, Shropshire.

In 1851 JR seems to be the son of John & Jane. Is this the John & Jane you mention?

Have you got any marriage or birth certificates in this matter?

Thanks for the 1851 - agrees with the dates I have pencilled in for John/Jane. Francis Shelton appears to be their son too, but in 51 he is away at school. Garbett doesn't ring any bells, but the fact that other brains are on this really helps.

You may well laugh - if Garbett can become Tarbett then why shouldn't Overton become Shelton? - but I still think I'll keep looking...
