In 1853 my 2xgt grandfather was employed by the Indian Navy as a 1st Class Engineer. Can anyone tell me what a 1st Class Enginner is please? By 1859 he was a Chief Engineer.

Thanks in advance. Lou

hi there,
1st Engineers are usually Chiefs and look after the entire engine room. They have 2nds and 3rds under them. Everyone has to speak to the chief before doing anything, and usually what the chief says goes.

If you are talking military navy 1st Class Engineer in the Indian Navy simply means a qualified engineer in other words fully qualified, First class does not mean that he was anything other than what we would know as an AB (Able Bodied ) today. From First Class Engineer he would have progressed to Leading Engineer, then to Petty Officer before reaching Chief

I was under the impression that a 1st class engineer was from a qualification obtained by passing certain tests as to his competancy.

A bit similar to a passed fireman who had qualified to become a rookie engine driver.

Hi Staffordshire Col and Hawkwind,

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Staffordshire Col thanks for the info on the progression from 1st Class to Chief, it's good to know.

This morning I am sending off for the evidence where it states he was employed as a 1st class engineer, I already have evidence of him being a chief engineer, so the info Staffordshire Col you have given me is much appreciated and adds a little more info to his progression up the ranks so to speak. So thank you for that.

Regards, Lou
