I 'm new to this so maybe someone can point me in the right dirrection. Have been trying to find the birth record for william richard miller. He died at 39 woodcroft rd, croydon on 14 11 1943 at the age of 44. I also know that he married Esther Whitbread on the 5 June 1920, listed as being 21 years old. On his fathers name on the marriage cert is william albert miller who was dead a the time of the marriage. These dates lead to him being born circa 1999 but I have checked and the only one I have found is not correct. Please can any any one tell me what the next step is

How about 1911 as a start? By cross-checking it seems these two were in same household:

MILLER WILLIAM RICHARD M 1900 11 Fulham London
MILLER WILLIAM ALBERT M 1864 47 Fulham London

Do you have an occupation for his father?

His POB is given as Fulham in the 1911, so looks as if the 1899 Fulham reg that Chrissie found could be him. If that is the one you sent for, did you give father's name as ref? If you gave William Albert and he is down just as William, they wouldn't have sent the cert.

May doesn't seem to be with them in 1911.

Have PM'd June just in case she is unsure how to return to thread (this happens all the time - wish Genes could help out here!)

Good thinking, Janet.

It looks as if William had a younger brother, with the family in the 1911:
HOUSEHOLD MILLER ALBERT VICTOR M 1904 7 Fulham London

and baptism on Ancestry:

Albert Miller info date William Miller,
May Miller

Afraid I don't have Premium membership to look it up. I think Richard is there too, but doesn't come up if I put mother's name May in.

Looks like 1911 is a fair bet. If it were me I'd be tempted to treat myself to some credits and have a look. I suspect the Fulham birth is the right one as it all fits - specifying Fulham as place of birth for him also comes up with same 1911 entry.

June has PM'd me:

Thanks for your help, think I may have the right one now, on the 1901 census, one year old
, father, bootmaker.

On marriage cert that I have his father is a boot repairer! looking good!

Not too sure if she is going to find her way back here though!

AHA!! Our 1911 William Albert is a shoe repairer - tried a couple of options for occupation! A dead cert I believe. How satisfying.

If you search for May Miller in 1911, and then search for a William Miller born 1871 (would tie in with what Potty found) in the same household, there is one showing. If you then change Williams year of birth to 1899 two are showing one in 1898 and one in 1900 (I did put Fulham as place of birth for young William) so you really need to get some credits.

Just did another search, William born 1900 is also listed with another William Miller.

Would you believe it........occupation of William born 1871 shown with May is bootmaker. No wonder this research lark can get very frustrating.
