I wonder if someone can answer a question i have?

I have just found a census ive been looking for.

The census shows the head of the family, his wife and child, then listed in the same household are 4 other people, 3 of them have 'MAR' written in the column titled 'relationship to head' and the 4th person has 'Son' but has a different surname to all of the others?

Look to the left,,if there is a tick this usually shows a divide between families who live in the same household but of different surnames.and often of no relationship.
