I must be very lucky. High Peak Borough Council is in charge of a very large cemetery at Glossop and Macclesfield Council in charge of a slightly smaller one and have a detailed plan of each "block" - there are dozens of blocks at Glossop - with every block with a reference number and every grave number shown. The kind and efficient people in charge will send me a copy of the relevant block with my plot highlighted.

I have sometimes had to pay (a relatively small amount for the value to me) and sometimes sent a donation to a local charity instead.

It can be a little difficult to find the actual grave where there is no headstone and the graveyard area is now all grass, but a little counting of rows and columns usually works. Also probably impossible to find a very old common grave location, even with the number.

Once I was on holiday in Devon and had a mind to look up my great-aunt's grave. The staff at Newton Abbott couldn't have been more helpful, even told me who purchased the grave and for how much.

Somebody must have records of grave numbers for various reasons, e.g. to know who is responsible for the safety of a headstone, which graves are "lapsed" (i.e. no further burials can take place without a further payment for the right to the grave), and, sad to say, where to locate a body for exhumation if it ever should be needed.

I know that churchyards were perhaps less meticulous in their record-keeping but municipal yards are much newer and are responsible to the public.

Hope you are as lucky as I have been.

Margaret

I am truly stunned. I deal regularly with three graveyards, two municipal and one a churchyard, and they provide me with maps and locations with no problem. After all, it is only right that if a relative wants to visit a grave that they are able to tell them where is it.
