Thanks everyone.I followed your tips and found several articles showing that he had been in trouble with the law since his teens and had been whipped while still a youngster. What a life.

try this if you have access to newspapers via Lancashire libraries online ref library

I searched for Richard Chick & came up with no results but search for just Chick in 1829 came up with the details of his trial - he was connected to 'a most notorious gang of burglars'

the day after his execution there is a report on how he tried to break out of Newgate

in fact there are several interesting articles about him - set the dates as before Nov 1829 and list sort descending

let me know if you still cannot access it

Hi Alison...

Just put the name in the search engine without any dates...I tried that and there seems to be a few articles.

Good luck

I have access to The Times archive via the Lancashire Library Service following a tip from a community member and want to look up any references to an ancestor,Richard Chick, who was hung for robbery on October 19th 1829.I would like to find out if he had been in trouble prior to this final offence, but when I type in his name and a spread of dates it always comes back with " no result". I'm obviously doing something wrong---not surprising as I'm an oldie and not good with computers--- so could anyone please talk me through the process and stop me tearing my hair out with frustration!
