Hi Keith,

I am going on a birth in the 1950s,the person tried to get the first registration, as to get both certificates,,,,,,, but was told it had an amendent to it and would be the same as the later one in the changed surname.

So they applied to the register office instead of GRO and was shown the amended original birth entry ,to include the father name which was done by --declarration-so for them applying resulted they would get two certificates but they would be both the same details,,,a waste of money.....

Is it still hot ?

You need to order this.

Births Mar 1909
BIRTLES Annie W. Derby 8b 460

Are you thinking this is the birth reregistered?

Births Mar 1911
Johnson Annie W.Derby 8b 559

With so many Johnsons chances are this isn't your Annie.

Kay, I disagree with you there,
I have recently obtained copies of the two certs issued for a very close relative who was born out of wedlock. The first was issued under mothers maiden name with no father named, the second issued 3 months later under fathers name has a statutory declaration naming the father after they married.

Kay,

Thank you for explaining that - I was beginning to get a little confused.

Hi Rachel,

If the childs birth registration had been soley in the mums surname with no alterations then one would be issued in that surname,,,once it has been ammended to alter and include another surname,,then the first gets cancelled out,so any further copies applied for will only be issued in the last applied surname,,,in this case the fathers,,or the mans surname who its been changed to.

There will only be 1 cetificate for this person,,

Hi Kay,

Thank you for your reply. I am slightly confused. If a mother registered her child's birth prior to marriage and the child's father was not present, then a certificate would be issued which would not have the child's father's name on it. So when the parents marry, the child's birth has to be re-registered, so surely there would be another birth certificate?

I look forward to your reply.

You will get the certificate which has the fathers surname ...if you ordered the one under the mothers surname..you will still get the one carrying the fathers surname..so either way same result...
only 1 certificate will be issued...you cant get both,

So in that case, did your aunt have 2 birth certificates? 1 under your nana's maiden name and 1 when your grandparents married?

Rachel

Rachel Report 3 Oct 2009 21:10

Hi,

Have had a quick look under both, and there are births registered for both possibilities. The mother was Annie Birtles and the child was also called Annie. The father's name was Charles Johnson. At the time of the 1911 census, Annie the child is 2 years old. I am unsure as to which one to send for.

I would guess at the Mother's name.

Have you tried a search under either name?

Hello,

I have an ancestor who was born 2 years before the parents married. I would like to obtain the birth certificate but am unsure as to what name the child be registered under? The father's surname or the mothers?

Any suggestions/advice gratefully received.

Regards

Rachel
