Agree with Gynn and Kath ,Military personnel had to have their commanding officers consent to marry and a marriage conducted without that wouldn't be recognised In order for the bride to be his next of kin and to be treated as his wife it had to comply with all the ARMY regulations

Kathleen and Gwyn - thank you so much. It's beginning to make sense now. It's interesting discovering things you don't know!

Kind regards - Pat

I'm not sure of the details, but soldiers had to have the permission of their commanding officer in order to marry.
Without that permission perhaps the Army did not recognise the marriage and therefore the couple would not be eligible for married quarters housing or certain pay or pensions benefits.

The 2nd marriage was perhaps after permission to wed had been granted.

EDIT
Kath types faster than me !

I'm not certain but I think when you are in the army you have to have permission to marry from your commanding officer. Perhaps they didn't have it the first time round so went through the ceremony again to get the right "paperwork" for the army - perhaps to get married quarters?

Thank you for that.

I've never heard of that happening before. Woolwich and Dartford are quite close and the same fathers were on both certificates! Is it legal to marry a second time and describe yourself as 'bachelor' and 'spinster' when you have married each other in the previous year?!

This sometimes happened with soldiers.

If they had no proof of first marriage they then got married again.

Alfred William Conyers (27) and Adelaide Augusta Tallentire (21) married in MAY 1907 at WOOLWICH Registry Office. They were both stationed at the Red Barracks, Ordnance College, Woolwich.

In DECEMBER 1908 Alfred William Conyers (28) and Adelaide Augusta Tallentire (23) described as "Bachelor"and "Spinster" (but they had married the year before!) were MARRIED AGAIN at DARTFORD Registry Office. They were then both living in Welling at this time.

I have copies of both certificates from the GRO. I am completely confused by this. How can the same people marry each other twice in consecutive years? Has anyone else come across this?

Thanks - Pat
