To all who replied,
i have had a reply from the Battalion museum75% of the records were lost in the blitz. They say that as he died of wounds, rather than died in action, it is not possible to say where he died, though most likely, to have been in the battles of Hill 60. Gravenstafal Ridge (22-23 April1915)or the general fighting around hill 60 (17th- 21st April,) when 24 members of the battalion were wounded. This all took place near YPRES
i thought you may be interested, after all your help

Having looked further into this it appears that the inclusion of the word "Aldershot" is an error on the part of Ancestry and should not appear at all.

Pauline, is this the record you found?
in simple terms the reference to Aldershot is just for admin purposes and not where he died

He can't have died of war wounds in Aldershot. If he did then he would have been buried in the UK. The fact that he is named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial means he died in Belgium but has no known grave.

Margaret, thank you for that info. Next time \\ie go to france , i will try to get to Ypres memorial. Do you know what the 15 star medal would have been? Maybe the Ypres Battle?

MargaretM Report 9 Oct 2009 13:19

The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence.

From this I would assume that he was gassed.
