How do you find out how many children/the names of children a person has given birth to? I only have the mothers name to go by and an approximate year .

As Glitter Baby mentioned, after 1911 the mothers maiden name was added to the birth indexes making searching easier. It does depend though on when you are talking about.

The census returns are a good place to start, they will record the names of the children in the household ON THE NIGHT OF THE CENSUS. Of course this may not give a complete picture as it is possible for children to have been born and died between census. To find possible children like this, you will need to view the parish records for baptisms and burials.

The 1911 census will give details of the total number of children born to a couple, and the number still alive. From that you can try and work out any likely births deaths.
