You will need to look at the actual index quarter by quarter

try this link

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8966&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

just enter their name and year that you want to check, then clickon View Image for each quarter

Update: FreeBMD is worth a try first as it is free, then if you find who you are looking for then you can always check the image on Ancestry

Maybe because I am used to it, but I find Freebmd much easier to use than Ancestry bmd's. And even though I have an Ancestry sub, I still use Freebmd most of all.
GIve it a try!!!

I agree, always try freebmd first - there can be stuff even in the 1930's. Much more accommodating I have found.

With just a few exceptions, Free BMD is virtually transcribed right up to around 1935.

the death I want to find is around 1946 so do free bmd cover then?

Almost certainly not.
On ancestry, go to the search births, marriages and deaths bit, then click on death indexes.
You will then get a box to fill in with name and the year you wish to search. When you start search you will see the 4 quarters and you will have to go to each one in turn and have a look.

If you're in the same country as the death - you can search the BMD's at your local records office - for free!
In England, you'll have to get a card, but just take along a utility bill and something with your signature on and you can look at ALL BMD's in the country!

Can you? That's a good tip, have never tried!

Christine, if you use the link i posted earlier/above then you can go directly to the year on Death Index: 1837-1983 on ancestry

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8966&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

and for births, marriages and deaths use this link

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

or you can opt to revert back to the old format using the link on ancestry home page
