The Charles William Phelps WAS the master jeweller with his business of Phelps Bros in Birmingham, but the family story is one brother ran off with the money or did the dirty and the business went under. Charles then became a music teacher and a musician playing for tea dances. They emigrated around 1913 (except for Eva Primrose and Charles who you have sorted out for me). Only three married daughters were left in England - one of whom was my gran, Marian Bessie Phelps.
The family lived in Brimingham before they emigrated and Charles William'c father and ancestors came from Bisley in Glos. THere was a very strong custom of naming a Charles William or William Charles in all lines of the family so it could get quite confusing.

I've just got in and found this amazing group of people who have solved so much. Thanks so very much everyone. Mary ANn Wyatt Trinder DID marry Charles William Phelps. and they died in Ontario.
I'm a bit beside myself with excitement and have to get my head in order. Have to read all the info again which you have so cleverly worked out without me!!!! WOW!
Thanks again and again, Jill

Bravo! Jim. So it was Charles Price who came to Canada aboard the Metagama not the Madagammon. Close!
So she must be the Eva P, Phelps that I found with the family in 1891 confirming she's the daughter of Charles William Phelps and Mary Ann Trinder.

Curious! In 1881 the same Charles W. Phelps is a master jeweller. But then this looks like your family except that he's William C. not Charles William and he's a gardener but born in a completely different place. However there is the same big gap in age between Charles & Mary.

William C. Phelps, head, 56, gardener, born Gloster, Micheldean

Jillian, are you sure that Charles William's wife was Mary Ann Wyatt and not Mary Ann Trinder?
This is the Charles who married Mary Ann Trinder and there's a daughter Charlotte the right age to be your Charlotte but what about all these other children?

This death, too, is confusing:
Mary Ann Phelps born 1857, England, died 3 June 1930, Hamilton Wenrworth, Ontario, age 73, widowed. Father William Trinder.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Oct 2009 14:09

There's this death too but things don't match:
Percy Harry Phelps, born 1897 England, died 10 July 1919, Hamilton Wentworth, Ontario, age 22. Parents Chas. Wm. Phelps and Mary Tungdon.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Oct 2009 14:00

There's a death in Wentworth, Ontario, Canada of Charles William Phelps, born 1838, died 11 Jan. 1925, age 87. Parents Charles Wm. Phelps and Charlotte Childs.

Jilliflower Report 11 Oct 2009 10:25

Have just been checking, Astra,
They all went to Canada
Charles William Phelps 1838 went with wife Mary Ann Wyatt Phelps 1856, but family story says he was on Ellis Island for a while - via USA???
Charlotte Phelps 1885 and her brother
Percival Harry Phelps 1897 both went 1913 I think
It could be that the Charles who told me he went on the Madagammon was Charles Price with his mother Eva Price (formerly Phelps)
There was a Harriet Phelps 1841.
But thanks anyway, I shall persue the Canadian immigration records.
cheers, Jill

Hi Jillian
If you Google Canadian Immigration lists you will find some sites to help.
I use Ancestry but i can't find a Percy and Charlotte Phelps travelling together. Four or five percy's but no Charlottes.
When were they born and where did they come from and their occupations will help a little.
Astra

OOH,Thanks, Astra, but I don't think that is them/it but I wonder if they might be some of the family as I don't think they all went on the same ship - I know/think Charlotte and Percy Phelps travelled apart from the rest on another ship.
Where do I look for this sort of information please?
Jill

A relation, Charles Phelps, emigrated to Canada from England around 1912 when he was about 7 and said he went on the 'Madagammon'. I can't find trace of a ship of a similar name. Can anyone help as it will tell me about when the family went to Canada and WHO went.
Thanks,
Jill
