An ancestor of mine named William Chick b.1773 in Portsmouth had a younger sister Ann b.1776. She married James Spencer Jefferson probably born in Alverstoke 1775. He was obviously considered an important member of the family because William called one of his sons Spencer Jefferson and the name Spencer is used in other branches of the family, BUT I can't find out anything about him and he really intrigues me. Has anyone any suggestions about how I can track him down? I've tried old newspaper files with no luck. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

"Spencer Jefferson" might just have been a name the family fancied rather than an important person.

To Barbara and Madmeg,
Thank you both for your messages which were very helpful. Having chased them up , it appears that James Spencer Jefferson dropped the"james" in his own name but had a son with his wife Ann in 1797 who was named James. The Sarah Jefferson bpt.1772 was probably J.S.J's elder sister and married Henry Stride, having a son James Henry Stride in 1795. It's great to move on a step or two!

It was also common to name a child after one of the godparents, in the hope that said godparent would be generous to the child ..... this could either be monetary or in sponsorship

so that could be the reason why William's son was called after his uncle-by-marriage.

Thanks everyone. Such a lot to take in and analyse! I've never heard of anyone baptising twins on separate days and in separate churches---maybe there are twoJefferson /Jepherson families out there. I'll have to do some more hunting.

No-not different JEFFERSONs as the parents for both children are
James Spencer and Ann Jefferson

Unfortunately it does not give the birth dates which would probably explain it !
