Poor transcribing from 1911 Census

That's what you pay, I guess, for getting 1911 online so quickly. Then they expect us to do their proofreading, encourage it in fact. I reckon we should get free credits for every bungle we sort out.

I found exactly the same with FreeBMD. I reported a John James COOK should be John Jones COOK but they said they couldn't change it as it looked like James to the transcriber on the index. It is Jones; clear as crystal, on the index.

You can add a postem next to the entry with the details of the birth/marriage or death on FreeBMD. You are also allowed to leave your email address on it if you like.

My great grandfather is living on his 'own manes'. Clear enough 'own means' on the image.

I know this isn't a serious mistranscription but it is what my old teachers would have called a SILLY MISTAKE!

Malcolm you are so right. Even before I signed up for the sub I looked at a few and almost all were wrong in some way. Terribly shoddy work.

Just paid for my 1911 sub with FMP but the transcribing is awful. Have checked about 30 records and at least 20 have errors. Even when the signature clarifies the family name the transcribers are making a stab at it and indexing them under bizarre names you would never find. My G-father is shown as a "plateror" when it clearly says "Plasterer"! Be aware when you get no results, they may be mis-transcibed & you need to search another way! Such a deterioration from the other census results.

Dear All,
"Shoddy" indeed! Have written to them & got a standard holding reply, nothing has been amended yet. Family name Browne is still shown as Beaman! And these are not entries with hard to decipher writing which do exist of course...As I pointed out to them all the London street names with errors still exist so would be easy to check (Coledman Rd instead of Caledonian Rd & Kentishn Town instead of Kentish Town! ).
I know what to look for and have eventually found the right entries but anyone else would never easily navigate the indexes & find them.
We'll see if they amend them.......

Have now had a reply about some of them. One they will change (Coledman) and one other name error they won't. They also refuse to change the "Plateror" occupation as they say they have re-checked the census and what they have transcribed comes within acceptable limits of what it could be! Have tried to reply to ask what a "Plateror" is as opposed to a Plasterer but their email system does not allow you to reply to/appeal their decision. So it goes down in history/onto the web completely wrong, very sad...
