AmazingGrace08 Report 14 Oct 2009 03:21

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone could help me find any records of the following family:

Catherine Bingham B 1848 B Ireland
Susan Bingham B 1851 Cromarty, Rossshire, Scotland
David Bingham B 1852 Cromarty, Rossshire, Scotland
Margaret Bingham B 1855 Cromarty, Rossshire, Scotland

Their parents were Robert Bingham b 1817 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland and Julia Haggarty b 1821 in Ireland.

I can locate no record of any of their births and can locate them only on census returns.

The childrens father Robert died in 1875 at sea and their mother Julia died in 1903 at the House of Refuge in Montrose, Scotland after residing for a number of years with her daughter Susan and her family. I can find no marriage record at all, for Robert and Julia so I am not sure if they were married in Ireland. Please note that the death certificates do not state who the parents were of either of them. Robert is noted as drowned at sea and Julia’s certificate has unknown as her parents as the informant appears to have been a poorhouse supervisor.

I have been able to trace what happened to Catherine Bingham and Susan Bingham so no problems there, but can find no record of Robert (b 1852) after appearing on the 1861 census when the family was residing at Catterline Village, Kincardineshire. Robert (the father) is shown as a Coast Guard. Margaret I have been able to trace in 1871 when she was residing with her sister Susan in Montrose, Scotland and was incorrectly recorded with the surname of Orkney, which was her married sister’s surname.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have checked nearly every source I can think of and there just does not seem to be recordings of any of their births!

Thanks

Rachelle

Apart from possibly Margaret, all the births are too early for Scottish civil registration, which started in 1855. Scotlandspeople has baptism records for before that and familysearch also has lots of baptism records for pre-1855.

There is this one, but it is a submitted record:

Hi all,

I had checked Scotland's People thoroughly hence how I have the death certificates of Robert & Julia and the marriage and deaths of their children Catherine and Susan and their children and so forth. I just can't seem to locate this family, they just seem to have popped up out of thin air and I can't go any further back on this line at all.

I couldn't think of anywhere else to look really and was hoping someone might have a brilliant idea!

Thanks anyway

Kath

Kath Report 15 Oct 2009 08:20

Hi Rachelle,
I have been following your thread and am now thinking that perhaps Robert Bingham & Julia Haggarty got married around 1847 in Ireland.
According to the 1861 Scotland Census, Catherine Bingham was born in Andreas, Ireland around 1848.
There was the great famine in Ireland 1845 - 1850 so they could possibly have gone to Somewhere else before finally arriving in Cromarty for Susan's birth.

(From the Irish Origins site)
Between one and one-and-a-half million people died of famine, fever, disease and exposure during the Great Famine of 1845-50, with at least another million emigrating. Precise figures are hard to pin down, but the Irish census statistics of 1851 showed a fall in population from 8,175,000 in 1841 to 6,552,000.

I found a birth for a Julia (Heagerty) 22/6/1823 in Killarney, Kerry, which is near Cork. Father: William (Heagerty)
Mother: Julia Connell. This Julia had a sister Mary b. 12/6/1820
I don't know if this is your Julia or not though Rachelle.
I've still not found a birth for Robert Bingham in Irvine Ayrshire, Scotland.

I found a birth on SP for a Robert Bingham b.1851 in Linlithgow, West Lothian.

Kind Regards
Kath

Having just seen a thread about Catholic baptisms now being on scotlandspeople, I did a search for Margaret Bingham, b1854/6 with parents Robert and Julia and one result came up. My Scottish geography is not good enough for me to select any of the parishes as being in Cromarty, so can't say where it was.

For info, the Catholic baptisms can be found at the bottom of the Other Records column.

There are results for Robert (b1851/53) and Susan

Hi Potty, Marion and Kath,

Wow thank you!!

I'll go off and check the Catholic records now. Heagarty would make sense as it is a name that would be easily mistranscribed!

I'll let you know how I go.

Thank you all once again

Hi all,

Okay I am very excited!!

You were spot on and the baptisms for Susanna, (I had her as Susan on her marriage & death certs), Robert and Margaret.

I had not realised that they may have been Catholics as Catherine married David Marshall and from that point on the entire family seems to have become Presbyterians/Methodists OR Catherine adopted David's religion when she married. I guess I won't know the answer to that.

The parish records clearly gave the correct date of births and baptisms so I'll see what I can find with the right information!

Marion and Kath I have noted the details from the IGI - however then it starts to get confusing if you try to find the marriage of William Heagerty to Julia Connell. I can't locate one and there is one that fits date wise but it is between William and a Cath Connell. .... I'l have to check out this a bit further.

Kath you mentioned where Catherine was born - on the 1861 Census. On Ancestry is states her place of birth as Andreas, Ireland. When you look at the certificate I cannot make out this word at all other than it starts with an A, so I am not sure if the people as Ancestry have just guessed as on the 1871 census Catherine has a place of birth only stated as Ireland.

Cheers

Rach

EDIT - I can't even locate a place called Andreas in Ireland using Google etc. Has anyone heard of this or is it more likely to me a mistake by Ancestry?
