Strange entry on Birth Certificate

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have a copy of a birth certificate here and in the box titled "Name, surname and maiden name of mother" the entry reads " Eliza Francis late formerly Hansford" I suspect that the unreadable word is a surname, I've never seen one like this before and the only conclusion I can come too is that Eliza had been previously married, can anyone confirm I am correct or put me right?

Thanks

Have you checked deaths for that quarter ?

I assume you mean it says "Eliza Francis, late XYZ , formerly Hansford", in which case it means she has been previously married, and Hansford is her maiden name.

I would think that the word after "late" is her previous married name and Hansford is her maiden name.

Graeme,

Do you mean late ? formerly Hansford, if so means there was a previous marriage.
