Thank you so much for you helpful advice. This is an English Certificate and just to get the name of the father of my Ancestor would be a big help.
This Lady has been very hard to track down.
I have been trying to solve this problem for 8 years, just discovered that she had married for the third time.I had been looking under a different name all along.
I will go ahead and order the marriage certificate.
Thank you!!!

It is important to recognise that not all registrations follow the same recording practice, especially in situations like this.

Also, information is only as good as that provided at the time. The requirement to provide supporting documentation is a relatively recent one.

Why not order one of the certs and see what it says?

My great Aunt married for the third time in 1946 at the age of 47.

She did not state previous married names but did name her father.

Her second marriage was in 1938 and again no mention of previous name but again named her father.

I only know they are right because of the address shown and the name of the witnesses

My husband's gg grandmother married three times. On her third marriage certificate in 1838 (of course, this was the first one after Civil Registration) she is just recorded as 'Rebecca WALKER, widow, daughter of William VINES. No mention of her maiden name or first married name.

It may be different on later certificates.

My g grandmother was widowed when she married my g grandfather in 1887. She is named on the certificate under her married name, widowed daughter of . . . . , Cashier.

Interestingly, her first marriage certificate gives the information that her father was deceased.

Assuming you mean England and Wales then her marriage certificates should show her father's name and occupation. The mothers name is not quoted on marriages, you will need her birth certificate for that.

Usual notation for subsequent marriages is to record the bride as Joan, lately Smith, formerly Brown. Where Brown was her maiden name and Smith the wife of her previous husband.

I haven't come across a third marriage cert so not quite sure if both former husbands names would be quoted, or how they would be shown.

there's no reason why the father's name wouldn't be on the certificate - if she knew who he was.

England and Wales marriage certificates only give father's name, you need birth certificate or baptism to get mother's name

Advice please..I have discovered that one of my Ancestors has been married three times, I know this is not unusual however I would like to know more about her parents..names etc.
When married for the third time my ancestor was middle aged 50 plus. When I request her marriage cerificate regardless of her age will the certificate show her parents names??.This is the info I require more than anything as this will unlock the key to a mystery I have been unable to solve.Thank you.
