Thanks Margaret

I will do so. There was no other Joseph Levett/Levitt who died in 1854 according to the death records on Ancestry and BMD. I reckon it's him.

Thank you.

Alison.

Why not contact the church and ask who else was buried in that grave?

Thanks for your replies DET and Irene.

He was not wealthy. They may be different people, there was a Joseph Levett living Spitalfields in 1851, although he was 8 years younger than the guy buried. I know sometimes dates of birth and death are wrong though.

It's quite a coincidence that the burial is exactly a week after my Joseph's death. Also the address in Southwark is another mystery. Whoever it was, went from the south side to be buried over the water.

I'm still not sure one way or the other.

My ancestor died at the seaside while convalescing but his body was brought home to the East End where he was buried. Perhaps something similar happened to your ancestor. Irene

They are either different people

OR

The Levitts had a family plot.....which unless they were a wealthy family, is unlikely.

Ancestry's new records of London burials would seem to suggest that an ancestor, Joseph Levitt, who died at Cardigan Street, Lambeth in November 1854 was buried a week later at St. James the Less, Bethnal Green, giving an address of Charles Street, Southwark.
I am a little confused as to whether this is the same man and if so, why he may have been buried in East London.
Any ideas?

Thanks Alison
