Hi DET, Derek, Heather and Hawkwind,

Thank you for your replies. Sorry for the delay, I am having computer problems at the moment, so please excuse my tardiness at replying.

Thank you for your offers of help to locate the marriage. Details I have are as follows;

The marriage I am trying to locate took place, I think, in Rempstone, Notts on, I think, 8/12/1828. The only church I can locate for that time is All Saints, but there may have been others!? It is the marriage of a John Hull to a Ann [Garner?]. I have found the date given from the IGI, but I am not sure that this is him. The only Hull I find is a Jno Hull. If I can find the church, I can look at the records [I live in Nottingham so have access to records locally] and try to work out whether this is him or not.

Children of the marriage [if this helps] are Elizabeth,Sarah, Ann, Joseph [John], George and Wiliam.

I have tried the website recommended by Sylvia - and it is brill, but unfortunately it doesnt take me any further than I have already got.

Any further help/information you can give to me would be, as always very much appreciated!

Hawkwind - thanks for the info about Norfolk records. How clever of you to have remembered that I had relatives in this area. I will look again at FreeREG for Norfolk records!

FreeREG will be a great site when the transcibing has been done - maybe this is a message to us all, to volunteer to do the work to get this site up and running as intended!!! [if only I had the time, I would love to be a transcriber!] In the last couple of months it has come on in leaps and bounds!!! Ours thanks to the volunteers - they are true stars!

You mention Norfolk in one of your posts? You will find that there are very few Norfolk records ion the IGI because they were refused permission to see the records by the local Archdiocese.

However, if you have a look at Free Reg (part of Free BMD) you will find that a large number of Norfolk Parish Registers have been extracted and are on there.

Where are these people? Ancestry have a lot of the LMA records for London area now.

Elaine..if you were to tell us what area you are looking at..it may be that several people, like me , have collections of Parish records that might help you. Thats what we're here for.butwithout names and dates and places..........

You could try freereg.org.uk - transcribed parish records - by volunteers.

Coverage is patchy, but being added to all the time. Of course the transcription is only one person's interpretation of the hand written original record, made in good faith.

Hi Sylvia,

I was basing my 25-40 yrs on the fact that I can access Phillimore's - which seem to go upto about 1812 [although some of his records dont go that far]

I will try the other website that you mention - I may just strike lucky!

Hi Bren,

I have just had a look at the on-line parish clerks - and unfortunately, it doesnt cover any of the counties that I need to search! Never mind, thanks for letting me know.

Many thanks for replying.

it isn't just a matter of 25-40 years ........................ it's the hundreds of years leading upto July 1 1837!

Lots of people on here have all kinds of ways of finding information, due to having subscriptions in sites, cds of parish records etc

If you get stuck, just post a question giving all the information that you do have.

When using www.familysearch.org ... the Mormon site ........... do be sure that you pay close attention as to whether a record is SUBMITTED or EXTRACTED

An extracted record has been taken from the actual parish record, and is as trustworthy as any aother transcribed record.

A submitted record has been sent in by someone, usually a Mormon church member, and there is almost never any backing documentation. Take such record under advisement, but do not enter into your tree until and unless you can find that documentation.

Personally, I only use the International Genealogical Records on familysearch.org, and pay no attention to the family records etc ........................ click on Advanced Search on the home page, then scroll down to International Genealogical Index (aka I G I)

You might also be interested in using the Hugh Wallis site .......... he took all the extracted records from familysearch.org, and put them together on one site. So you know that any record on there is an extracted record. Unfortunately, he has not updated the site since 2004

www.freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

One thing to note is that familysearch.org seems to rotate its records ............... some times you find a record that you cannot later find, or vice versa. So you should always check back.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for replying. I have looked on the IGI and I think that the marriage may well be 1928 - I was wanting to find confirmation in some way. Registry office's didnt exist at this time - did they? If not, I can guess at the churchs in the area and check at the archives/library

Hi Allan,
Thanks for replying. Luckily, the marriage should have taken place in my area - so finding the records [if the marriage I suspect is the correct one!] shouldnt be a problem. I didnt really realise that I had hit a brick wall, until I tried to search on FreeBMD and it said that the records should be post 1837!!!

So, we are talking about a problem area of approx 25-40 years when record accessibly on the internet is not possible - blimey, that will slow down my research!!!!

I didnt know whether I was unaware of something ,that the more experienced amongst us, were using as a research tool. I hopefully will be OK on this marriage, but I think that maybe Norfolk will have to wait a bit longer!!

Thanks again.

Before 1837 is when things start to get tricky, because virtually the only source is parish records. Some are brilliant, others are a nightmare because some vicars were hopeless at keeping them up to date. There are some but by no means all parish records on http://www.freereg.org.uk

The principal source will be local record offices - which of course means getting there. OK if it's local but if you're in Devon, say, and you're trying to find a marriage in Northumberland it could be a problem.

Many family history societies have transcribed records and even put them on CD - can be pricey if you've got to search more than a couple of parishes.

I expect other folks will suggest more places to look, so don't give up!

I assume that you have looked on the IGI? Members do have different cd's and access to various websites,so if you post what you are looking for maybe someone can help you

Can anyone help me with tracing a marriage before 1837? I have managed to find free access to Phillimore's records - but although published in the early 1900's - they seem to only go upto about 1812!!!
