The 1901 census is on Ancestry. If you haven't got a subscription, put his details, and the spinsters, on here. Somebody will check for you.

I have actually seen censuses where children of the family have been described with occupation as Household Servant ........ it's usually been a daughter, but occasionally a son.

AND most of those have been on farms .......... OH's family in Westmoreland and Yorkshire had several familes who did this. BUT they did tend to put Dau in the relationship column

Maybe the fact that he was a foundling accounts for it ..... he would be of working age, so they put him to work.

is there any way of finding this out were can i get the 1901 census to see if he is on it with them

on the census it said servant in the relations part and farm hand on the occuption part

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 20 Oct 2009 21:27

If he was a foundling, literally found abandoned as a baby, then perhaps the spinsters gave him their surname.

Also is 'servant' the relationship, or his occupation? If it's his occupation he may not be a servant to the spinsters but working elsewhere.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Oct 2009 01:28

well, they filled yout the census themselves, so they described him as they thought of him ............... but as that does not show on here, then we're all in the dark!!

Woudl you like to qualify what he was classed as on the 1911.

Have you found him on the 1901 to see what the situation was then?
