thank you all again. i have managed to do it'it downloaded onto ancestral quest which i quite like .so many thanks to everybody your help is much appreciated

Hi Jacqueline,

As Brian said, Gedcom is a supposed universal (there are differing versions) format for transfering genealogical data.

However, it is purely a text file, and you will need family tree software of some sort on your computer to make any sense of it.
Again as Brian mentioned, it will not effect your tree on GR.

A gedcom is simply a copy in a particular, universally-recognised format, and will not affect your existing tree.

hello is there some kind soul on here that can tell me if i download gedcom file from genes' will i still be able to view my tree as it is now' or will it alter it in any way. i dont really understand how to do it . but was wanting to download on to memory stick 'so i can take with me to england later this year. thank you all
