Had a look at the overseas index under the following...

GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES SUPPLEMENT(1761 to 1924) 1761 - 1924 ELLIOTT to EVANS
GRO REGIMENTAL BIRTH INDICES (1761 to 1924) 1761 - 1924 ERWIN to ESTEN
GRO ARMY CHAPLAINS BIRTH INDICES (1796 to 1880) 1796 - 1880 ELMES to EYLES
GRO MARINE BIRTHS INDICES (INFORMAL CERTS 1-41) 1837 - 1965 BASS to GREATREX
GRO MARINE BIRTHS INDICES (1837 to 1965) 1837 - 1862 DOBELL to FRASER

They were the only sections that came up in searching for the surname.

Sorry but there is nothing for Ess or anything similar.

Have a similar problem. In this case the relative Auguste Pralet stated he was born about 1846 in Middlesex - no birth or marriage registrations though - and his mother was a naturalised British subject born in Paris about 1824. Found a number of possible leads on Family Search by specifying France as the country.

can anyone tell me how to find the birth registration of people born in france, but who are british subjects. my GT grandmother, matilda ess was born in paris france. but the census shows that she was a british subject at the time of her birth. i cant fing anything anywhere for her father, robert ess, either. maybe the surname is spelt differently. he was a chair maker so he may have been working there, or her mother was french, married to an englishman and went to her family to have the baby. who knows ?any help would be good. thanks folks.
